What is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy, commonly known as EDMR, is a form of psychotherapy that was originally developed to help those living with distress from traumatic memories find relief. The goal of EDMR is to help individuals access and process their traumatic memory so that they can find an adaptive solution.

EDMR can effectively provide relief from related distress, and negative beliefs tied to the trauma are resolved.  Studies have indicated that this is a highly effective form of treatment, with results showing that 84% to 90% of those who experienced a single trauma find their PTSD symptoms resolved after three 90-minute therapy sessions. Additionally, approximately 77% of combat Veterans found that their PTSD symptoms were resolved after 12 therapy sessions.

EMDR occurs over the course of several sessions, typically lasting between 60 and 90 minutes. There are eight phases associated with EDMR that you’ll move through with your trained clinician. This includes:

  • Phase 1: The first phase includes gathering information about you, and your distressing memories, and determining if EDMR is an appropriate treatment intervention for you at this time.
  • Phase 2: The next step is to ensure that you can effectively cope with emotional distress in a few different ways. This can include imagery and other stress reduction techniques that you can use during the remaining phases of EDMR.
  • Phase 3 to 6: The next several phases will focus on identifying your memory in detail, negative beliefs about yourself stemming from the memory, and all the related emotions and physical sensations that arise when thinking about the traumatic memory. During these phases, you must be able to cope with the distress you’re experiencing so that you are able to recognize positive beliefs about yourself.
  • Phase 7: Next, your clinician will ask you to keep track of related experiences that come up throughout your week, and make note of the coping and calming strategies you learned earlier in treatment.
  • Phase 8: Lastly, you will explore the progress you have made so far and the impact it has had on your life and your overall level of functioning. If you have other traumatic memories, you may then begin the process over, addressing these new memories.

How Much Does EMDR Cost With Cigna Insurance Coverage?

The overall cost of EMDR therapy when you’re insured will depend on the specifics of your health insurance plan. As an example, your plan may have specific out-of-pocket expenses such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance rates. Cigna generally covers some, if not most, of the cost of behavioral health treatment programs.

To get an accurate estimate of costs, it’s best to contact your therapy provider or Cigna directly. They can provide detailed information on how much you’ll need to pay and any potential additional charges based on your policy.

How To Check Cigna Coverage Levels for EMDR Therapy?

If you’re wondering how much Cigna covers for EMDR therapy, there are a few steps you can take to check on your coverage levels. This includes reviewing your plan documents, more specifically your behavioral health benefits. Another option would be to call Cigna directly and ask a customer service representative to assist you.

A third option, and one of the simplest options, is to complete the Harmony Substance Abuse Recovery Group’s online insurance verification form and then contact us. Our Admission Counselors are familiar with Cigna’s various insurance plans and can help you determine your coverage options for EMDR therapy, and understand

How To Get Cigna to Pay For EMDR Therapy?

Once you know that Cigna will provide you with coverage for EMDR therapy, you may find yourself wondering what the process looks like. Before you engage in treatment, your insurance will be verified. One of the important questions to ask during this process is if you’re required to obtain authorization before you begin treatment.

If your plan does require authorization, that’s your first step, which your treatment provider will assist with. It’s important to remember that your treatment provider is familiar with this process and can provide valuable guidance and assistance during this process. As you engage in treatment, your treatment provider will automatically submit medical claims to Cigna on your behalf. You may be responsible for some out-of-pocket expenses in the form of copayments, deductibles, or coinsurance. Some plans require additional authorizations, which your treatment provider will track and assist you with. If you find out that your medical claim was denied for some reason, you do have the right to appeal their decision. When you do this, you will need to show why the treatment you received was medically necessary. Again, should this happen, your treatment provider is a valuable ally who can guide you through this process.
